Butte has an abundance of fun life experiences to offer. Situated on the west slopes of the Continental Divide in southwestern Montana, Butte has it all.
Picture this! Summer: Sixteen beautiful tennis courts. You say it's raining? No problem! We have a state of the art indoor facility - the Copper Dome Racquet Club - open to the public - 3 indoor courts.
Two golf courses in Butte - the Country Club and the Municipal plus Fairmont Hot Springs Resort and the Old Works Golf Course in Anaconda. Both a short distance to the West.
Blue ribbon rivers for fishing. The Big Hole River is one of the most famous and in half an hour from your door you're at the river with pole in hand. The rivers also offer great floating and kayaking for those enthusiasts.
Hiking and camping abound in our area.
Perhaps you would prefer lake activities? Georgetown Lake is an hour's drive and Canyon Ferry offers everything, including windsurfing, for a drive of an hour and a half.
Picture this! Winter: Butte is proud to have the U. S. High Altitude Speedskating Oval. The facility hosts many events including World Cup races. Snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Every direction you travel will give you a downhill skiing experience - Discovery Basin - one hour away; Lost Trail Powder Mountain - two hours scenic drive through the Big Hole Valley; Maverick Mountain - two hours south; Bridger Bowl - 1 ½ hours to the east just out of Bozeman; and Big Sky Ski and Summer Resort - two hours away. The snow is the best in southwestern Montana plus many sunny days.
Butte's central business district is the largest contingent National Historic District in the United States. Butte has a very colorful history. It was born as a mining community better known as the Richest Hill On Earth. It played a very important part in the copper industry with its underground mines in the 1800's. Around 1900 the population of Butte was around 100,000. It was the largest major city between Chicago and San Francisco. The city had many theaters and playhouses hosting many movie stars in live appearances.
Labor
Labor problems abounded over the years and also the fluctuating prices for metals. Increases in costs or production added to the problems. Population started to decline and in the early 1980's mining closed entirely. However, Butte is a community of a lot of self-pride and spunk. City fathers got together to encourage industry to locate in Butte. The community was awarded the designation of ALL AMERICAN CITY and also CAN DO CITY.
At present, Butte's labor force is diversified into many different industries. The community itself has much to offer. The Butte / Silver Bow Arts Foundation is situated in the Arts Chateau, a period museum located in one of the old mansions. The Mother Lode Theater offers a wide variety of entertainment - from Broadway touring productions like Hello Dolly to old classic films like Gone With The Wind.
Education
Education is top-rated in Butte. You may have heard of our nationally rated small college - Montana Tech of the University of Montana. It is a top ranked engineering school that offers other degrees in computer science, industrial hygiene, occupational safety and many others. Tech attracts students from all over the world. The south campus - the College of Technology - offers a variety of associate degrees.
Butte offers public education through School District #1 - K through 12. The Catholic School District offers K through 12 also. The community gives a family choices of other private schooling.
